Hotel, events center planned for EG

EAGLE GROVE — A new hotel and events center is being planned just south of the Dollar General store in Eagle Grove, according to Bryce Davis, Wright County economic development director.

Davis said a hotel feasibility study was conducted earlier in the year.

“We realized through that study that Eagle Grove would be a successful market for a hotel,” he said.

The proposed development would be situated along the city’s business corridor on South Commercial. The land is located about 5 miles north of the Prestage pork processing plant that is under construction.

The city’s Community Development Corporation has ownership of two properties in the area.

“The land we ended up acquiring was enough footprint for a hotel events center combination,” Davis said.

The houses and trees on those properties are to be removed, he said.

The cost estimate of the project and building specifications are not yet available.

“Right now we are going through cost estimates and a master site plan,” Davis said.

The hotel and events center will have two separate buildings with two separate owners, according to Davis. But he said the general manager of the hotel would be the point of contact for all room reservations for both the hotel and events center.

The events center is to be owned by a nonprofit organization.

It will play host to formal events such as weddings, class reunions, and career fairs, according to Davis.

Davis said an investors group made up of Eagle Grove residents would be in charge of most of the features the hotel and events center will offer.

Eagle Grove Mayor Sandy McGrath supports the development efforts.

“The city standpoint is whatever it will take to support this, we are willing to look at because adding a business and adding a hotel only keeps people local, keeps people doing business in Eagle Grove, draws more people to Eagle Grove and offers an amenity for quality of life,” she said.

McGrath said the city is still working on renovations to the city’s Memorial Hall building, which is also viewed as an events center.

“We are continuing to take care of Memorial Hall,” she said.

The most recent work addressed heating and cooling needs, she said.

“We always take care of our buildings,” McGrath said. “But our public has expressed a need for a larger venue and a more formal venue.”

Davis said the hotel is needed as the county continues its period of growth.

“This is definitely up there in our top priorities to get done,” he said.

More information on this development is anticipated in the coming weeks, Davis said.
